A MESSAGE FROM OUR PAST PRESIDENT
AND FOUNDER, JOSE TORRES

It has been my pleasure to serve as president of the Valley Wide Kayak Club for the last two years. In that time I have seen its members grow and have seen the excitement in their faces at each meeting. Along with the knowledge shared at each outing by fellow kayakers (whether they be novice, intermediate or expert), they seem to share the same thrill of kayaking. Educating the general public on kayaking on our local waters was an adventure as well as a challenge for me.

Ten years ago when I was finishing my kayak adventure paddling down the Mississippi River, I wondered what next adventure would be. I had thought of other rivers and large bodies of waters and wanted to find a place to paddle where no one else had paddled a kayak before. I had heard of a new reservoir being planned for the San Jacinto Valley. I decided to attend the Metropolitan Water District planning meetings to assure a kayaking would be one of the water sports planned for the reservoir. After years of meetings and research we were promised a place on Diamond Valley Lake.

This was not enough though, I felt that I wanted to make sure that whoever wanted to enjoy this sport did not have to endure the same mistakes I had gone through in learning. Having been a fireman for thirty years and responding to numerous incidents where drowning had taken place, I felt there was a need to offer a safe avenue where people could learn the sport of kayaking.

Our club is still in its infancy stage; there are still many challenges to conquer. There are still local lakes that could offer wonderful kayaking. Numerous folks who have wanted to kayak have not yet tried and are looking for some guidance to lead them. I know that I am not alone in my passion for kayaking and that there will always be someone to take over where I have left off and will continue to share their love of kayaking with others. I wish you all a safe paddle.

May you always have a tailwind and your waters be calm.
