Press Release
For Immediate Release
April 16, 2002

On Saturday, May 4, 2002, women from the Valley Wide Kayak Club and other kayak clubs in California will paddle laps at Lake Hemet to raise funds for Camp Ronald McDonald for Good Times, located in Mt. Center, near Lake Hemet. Camp Ronald McDonald for Good Times brightens the lives of kids with cancer as they spend time outdoors - and away from the hospital - enjoying friendships, fun, and adventure. It is a cost free sleep away camp for kids with cancer and their families.

The goal of the Valley Wide Kayak Club Women's Charity Paddle 2002 is to send as many kids to camp as possible. As it costs $750 to send one kid to camp, the club is planning now for a very successful fundraiser! Funds will be raised four ways: (1) Registration fees for women paddlers to kayak on Lake Hemet, (2) Personal contributions to women paddlers, (3) business and educational sponsors, and (4) entry fees to the Charity Paddle Event at Lake Hemet. All funds raised will go to these kids to make their lives a little brighter.

We invite the public to come on out to Lake Hemet and share in the festivities and help send these great kids to camp. We will have a stage set up along the shoreline, with announcements throughout the day and concluding with an awards ceremony.

There will be educational booths, food, and entertainment including a mariachi band, Cinco de Mayo Mexican food, Ronald McDonald, Smokey the Bear, a Forest Service truck with personnel, a CDF fire truck and ambulance with crew, an award ceremony, raffle prizes, and many other activities for families. One of the really special activities planned is kayak rides on Lake Hemet for kids from Camp Ronald McDonald for Good Times age seven and under. Rescue trained members of the club will paddle them in tandem kayaks along the shoreline.

The Valley Wide Kayak Club Charity Paddle Committee is working closely with Camp Ronald McDonald for Good Times staff to make this event a success. The Charity Paddle Committee recently had a tour of the camp by Facilities Manager Michael Thomas, and they came away more committed than ever to the cause of sending these kids to camp. Anyone interested in getting a tour of the camp should call Facilities Manager, Michael Thomas. At (909) 659-4609. To find out more, check out their website at www.Campronaldmcdonald.org

The Valley Wide Kayak Club was formed in August of 1999 to promote safe sea kayaking on Southern California's inland valley waterways, including Metropolitan's reservoirs, Diamond Valley Lake and Lake Skinner. Its many energetic, dedicated, professional members are very enthusiastic about the future of kayaking on Diamond Valley Lake, Lake Skinner, Lake Hemet and many other waterways in Southern California, Baja and the western states. For information on our club go to: www.valleywidekayakclub.org

The Mission of the Valley Wide Kayak Club accounts for much of their success and explains their purpose well:

"Valley Wide Kayak Club is dedicated to the safe and continuing enjoyment of the paddle sport of kayaking by maintaining a standard of excellence in: educating its members in areas of safety, paddling techniques, proper attire and rules and regulations of lakes and waterways; encouraging the exploration and recreational use of lakes and waterways by sharing knowledge, providing and developing leadership, and scheduling activities; promoting goodwill and understanding of kayaking and fostering its development; encouraging, assisting, and providing direction to the conservation of water resources and adjacent lands for recreational purposes; creating an awareness of lakes and waterway systems through community education programs, news media, and presentations."

Valley Wide Recreation and Parks District in San Jacinto sponsors our kayak club where they hold meetings the first Monday of each month. They are a member of the Hemet/San Jacinto Chamber of Commerce. Membership has grown to over two hundred members in just over two years and consists of all age groups, including single adults, married couples, families with children, and senior citizens. A few members are disabled and enjoy the freedom that kayaking provides them. The experience level of members range from beginning paddlers to paddlers with many years' experience. Experienced members help inexperienced members learn to kayak. Most members have touring/sea kayaks; a few have recreational kayaks or sit on top kayaks. The club sponsors two events each month and travels to Newport Beach, Mission Bay, Catalina, and the Colorado River on day outings and over night camping and wilderness trips.

PRESS RELEASE

September 12, 2001

The Valley Wide Kayak Club is pleased to announce that Saturday, September 15, 2001 is the "Official Opening Day for Kayaking on Lake Hemet". From 9:00 am to 11:00 am on Saturday, club members are putting on a continental breakfast for members of The Lake Hemet Municipal Water District Board of Directors and Staff and other dignitaries who have supported the effort to approve kayaking on Lake Hemet. The directors voted at the Lake Hemet Municipal Water District board meeting on May 15, 2001 to allow kayaking on Lake Hemet starting September 15, 2001. As usage during the summer months is very intense, the board set the time frame for kayaking from September 15th to May 15th of each year.

The board decided that kayak safety training is required before permits will be issued to kayak on Lake Hemet. Anyone interested in taking the kayak safety program can contact Nancy Austin, Secretary of the Valley Wide Kayak Club at (909) 658-7319 or email her at NLAsofar@aol.com. Paddlers are welcome to join the Valley Wide Kayak Club; however, they can elect to take the Non Water Body Contact Safety course only if they like. The fee is $25.00.

New rules and regulations for incorporating kayaking at Lake Hemet have been introduced by the Lake Hemet Municipal Water District Board of Directors:
· Kayaks must be sit in side kayaks at least 10' long
· No sit on top kayaks (due to water body contact issues) or inflatables allowed on Lake Hemet.
· Kayakers must have taken the approved Non Water Body Contact Safety course and present a card with their drivers license number (or ASB card number) showing they successfully completed the course when they arrive at Lake Hemet.
· Children 12 to 15 who have taken the approved safety may paddle their own kayak with parental supervision only. 16 to 18 year olds who have taken the approved safety course are treated the same as adults.

For years, individual kayakers have begged to be allowed on the lake, which traditionally has allowed only fishing boats. One of the Valley Wide Kayak Club goals was to convince The Lake Hemet Municipal Water District to approve kayaking on Lake Hemet. After a convincing presentation to their board in September of last year, the board approved a 60-day trial period for the months of March and April of this year. During the trial period, approximately 40 club members participated in the trial and had the pleasure of kayaking on Lake Hemet in all types of weather, from sunny days to windy, cold and rainy days! The trial was a huge success!

The club has been in existence since August of 1999. Currently, the membership includes 161 members, 16 which are mountain residents: Jose Torres (President), Helen Henderson (Vice President), Jim Daniels, Tawny Crist, Teresa Lease, Greg Ross, Norm Lampman, Holly Ring, Linda Mushaney, Michael Crump, Veda Roubideaux,
Mark Johnson, Robert Sumrell, B. J. Johns, Ed Pyncombe, and Joan McG.White.

Jose Torres and Diane Boss started the club in August of 1999 in the interest of establishing kayaking at Metropolitan Water District of Southern California's new reservoir, Diamond Valley Lake. MWD officials were convinced that that stable sea kayaks could be used safely on Diamond Valley Lake. The club received special permission from the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California for members to sample Diamond Valley Lake during two special events in March and October of 2000.

"Kayaking is so popular now, its positive, very peaceful, and it puts you so close to nature", according to club spokesperson, Diane Boss. "Lake Hemet is an awesome lake with beautiful gifts of nature, golden and bald eagles, deer, birds, pine trees, and snow covered mountains", said membership director, Kathy Hakala,.

Regular monthly meetings are held at Valley Wide Sports and Recreation, 901 W. Esplanade, San Jacinto, California, the 1st Monday of every month at 6:30 pm. The next meeting is October 1, 2001. A monthly kayak outing is held at Lake Perris - Sail Cove, the Sunday after the meeting, where the Non Water Body Contact Safety Course is taught. The next outing is October 8 from 10 am to 12 pm. The club takes regular trips to places like the Colorado River in Black Canyon below Hoover Dam, the coast of Baja, Catalina, the Sierra Lakes, Southern California beaches, Big Bear Lake, and many more.
